Aster x 'Dawson Road' (ex: Will Forster) - Vigorous, late, stoloniferous and ground covering is this pretty Aster that came to us from Will Forster. It will definitely want to colonize if content. Medium purple slightly cupped flowers fully one-third larger than A. oblongifolius with a golden puff of sexual parts dotting the meeting point of the strap-shaped petals. A dark red-purple ring at the base of the yellow center develops as the flower matures. The leaves are elipses of medium flat green immediately suggesting a connection to A. oblongifolius though we are unclear if this is a mutant pure Aster oblongifolius or if it is a naturally occurring hybrid with A. oblongifolius as one of its parents. But in that 'Dawson Road' appears not to produce seed its apparent sterility suggests a hybrid with vigor. Will hypothesizs that its other parent may be A. carolinianus though I have a suspicion that it could be A. novae-angliae. It will grow taller than A. oblongifolius and flowers a bit later than straight A. oblongifolius. This came to Will Forster circa 2003 from the now defunct Niche Gardens. Dawson Road is where the former Niche gardens operated; whether or not it hybridized there or was a plant from a batch of liners brought in from a wholesaler is unknown. Full to half sun in fertile, draining soil. Established potted Aster from cutting.
