Hamamelis japonica var. arborea – apparently rare in the U.S., this Japanese shrub or small tree is lovely. Yellow, slightly fragrant yellow flowers with red centers hug the many branches in early spring. Handsome green leaves emerge after the flowering. The foliage turns a nice yellow shade in the autumn garden. This variety arborea distinguishes itself from the species because iit grows more upright and therefore can be more easily trained into a small tree. Although it is reported and perhaps soundly that this fine shrub/tree grows 4 to 6 feet wide we have espaliered ours and measure the horizontal branches as 8 to 10 feet wide. Maybe the wider measurement is because of the espaliered condition of this handsome woody plant; take your pick! Full sun to 3/4 open shade plant in fertile, draining soil. Cutting grown.
