Diphylleia cymosa – This is such a neat denizen from the southeastern U.S. The large, rounded peltate umbrella leaves held generally in pairs are bold all season long. The inflorescence rises on a short vertical stem from the crotch where the two leaves diverge – very much as in Mayapple; there the similarity ends. Starry white flowers held within the framework of a rounded dome are a sweet and welcome addition to the woodland garden. The pedicels which loosely have the look of an umbellifer develop a bright, juicy red color holding up deep dark blue fruits over the fabulous leaves which often become infused with a red to bronze-red tone in our late season garden. This is a clumping perennial with slow increase in girth. Site Diphylleia cymosa in part sun to open shade planted in fertile moisture-retentive soil. Established potted perennial from division.
