Aconitum sinomontana - We're thinking this to be an invalid name. This Monkshood came our way about 15 or so years ago and has proven itself hardy and worthy. It has performed some magical self-sowing, not in a threatening or obnoxious way but new stems have sprung up adjacent to where the orignal plant stands which is now a slowly expanding small colony. The typical medium purple flowers like Spanish conquistador helmets occur at the tops of stems in middle-late summer for many weeks. This tall growing species, up to 7 feet tends to remain erect though some stems may take a partial fall and lean into nearby shrubs. If you have a spot in your shade garden that calls for taller and purple then you might consider this perennial. I wish someone who knows better than me could exactly ID this species. It's of Asian origin most likely... even if the moniker is incorrect sinomontana points a finger. Fertile ground in open to dappled shade or half sun, morning preferable. Established potted short, plump and hard rhizome dug from the garden.
