Nolina texana and Rachel - Bear Grass from Quackin Grass Nursery

Nolina texana - Bear Grass is graceful, tough and evergreen. Native to New Mexico into central Texas this is not a plant for the northeast. Though grass-like Sacahuista, another common name, is not a grass; rather it is set in Liliaceae and close cousin to the Agave clan. Interestingly, Sacahuista which translates to "Thorngrass" is a hybrid word derived from Aztec tongue. White to cream flowers are densely set on a thick, upright inflorescence which arises on a short stalk from the center of the rosette. These occur in spring and early summer. This is a plant that thrives in searing summer heat in full sun and scrabble. Bear Grass will be right at home in rock gardens, cacti borders and any plant collection that encompasses the amazing flora of northern Mexico and the American Southwest. It will also be handsomely used in containers albeit larger ones but, of course, consider the hardiness of this fine plant and your location; if on the edge planted containers that can be moved and stored indoors that might work.
