Heptacodium micinoides

Seven-son Flower

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Heptacodium micinoides - Seven-son Flower is a large bush displaying long semi-glossy deep green leaves set in opposite fashion. Late season white flowers in August and September are arranged in a 6-inch long, showy panicles. And they emit a lovely, sweet perfume. When the flowers have had their season what remains is like a second flowering; the sepals are persistent and can shade from an alluring pink to an even deeper glowing red. Though this shrub will happily settle into woodland shade better sepal color retention will occur in full sun. Chalky bark in clay, gray and beige peels in long papery strips providing four season interest, especially welcome in winter. Seven-son Flower can be trained into a single trunk making for an unusual small-medium tree with a rounded crown. Beautiful as a small grove or used as a specimen this interesting and comely shrub in the Caprifoliaceae. Site in half to full sun in fertile, draining soil. Established potted shrub from cutting.
