Colchicum x agrippinum - May be purchased singly or save money and purchase a group of five. Very tessellated flowers erupt from the earth in early-mid September making this colchicum among the early flowering forms. Heavily freckled Naked Ladies blossoms stand about 4 inches tall on this naturally occurring hybrid believed to be between C. variegatum and C. autumnale. Having never been found in the wild it is presumed to be a hybrid of garden origin. Corms are somewhat smaller as compared to others in its extended family. But don't be fooled - it will put on a picturesque and memorable show. Foliage is narrow and grass-like and not nearly as imposing as its larger brethren. It will fit perfectly in meadows without dense competition, lawns that are spottier than solid, terrific in the rock garden or consider a patch expanding into a colony erupting through a low, non-squelching ground cover. In any circumstance Colchicum x agrippinum will grace the circadian rhythm of your lives, a most welcome visitor striking the annual clock in expanding glory at the very start of meteorological autumn.
