Paeonia ostii

Tree Peony

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Paeonia ostii - Beautiful shrub form of Tree Peony with large, single open-faced white flowers subtended with a golden ring of anthers supported by rich violet-red filaments surrounding the violet-red female parts. Petals are somewhat ruffled. It's like a full moon with attitude! Flowers stud matte-finished pinnate foliage. This is a suffruticose plant meaning that it sprouts new flowering growth from old wood; so, unlike the lactifloras do not prune it down to the ground at season's end. Let it be. This lovely plant, an aristocrat among the queens of the garden, can grow to be as much as 6 feet tall but will more likely settle between 4 to 5 feet. Site in partial shade, morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon exposure. Plant in fertile soil with added organic matter. Long-lived and, oh, so worthy... get it while you can. But once planted best not to move the elegant empress... she'll resent you for it. You won't ever be sorry for having planted this Tree Peony species. And more good news: whereas most if not all of the cultivars are grafted our Paeonia ostii are seed grown and on their own wood. Established potted shrub, seed grown..

Genus Overview: Paeonia

Common Name: Peony

We have fallen in love with the species peonies. They stand on strong stems and require no staking. They flower in a range of colors with varying flower shapes at different times in the spring landscape. Many are striking woodland species and function at their best in open to dappled shade. Some sport fascinating and showy late season seed heads upping the interest ante for herbaceous perennials with added seasons of beauty. Most of our offerings are seed grown. Culture is noted in the descriptives.
