Leucothoe x 'Scarletta' - ​Nice, compact low-growing broadleaf evergreen shrub with arching, fountaining stems covered with 5-inch lustrous blades ending in a point. Foliage emerges bright red and matures glossed deep green. The leaves turn red-purple to bronze purple as the weather cools towards the shorter days of the year. Attractive axillary spikes flowers hold numerous waxy white urn-shaped flowers which erupt in May. Cool, acid draining loam. Sandy fertile loam is fine. 'Scarletta' will tolerate some clay. Site in part to open shaded exposure. Does not like wind. Potted shrub from cutting. 'Scarletta' is the result of a breeding program between Leucothoe axillaris and L. fontanesiana which took place in the late 1970's in Ohio. Common name is Dog Hobble... REALLY???
