Sedum telephium subsp. maximum 'Purple Emperor' - Dusky purple leaves and fiery candy red-purple flowersare the hallmark of 'Purple Emperor'. Unlike 'Autumn Joy' this is not a sterile form. We think it likely that many nurseries are selling seedlings as 'Purple Emperor'. As they are not clonal seed-sprung individuals will be variable. It would be more truthful to offer these plants as "Purple Emperor Strain" or merely Sedum telephium subsp. maximum 'Atropurpureum'. We have a number of offspring in our stone and cacti garden with a spectrum of foliage and flower color. But it is from our actual 'Purple Emperor' that we take cuttings. Full sun in scrabbled, sandy and a somewhat impoverished soil. Too much wet is an anathema for this Stonecrop. Established plant from cutting.
