Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Akebono' - Red Dragon Oriental Paperbush from Quackin Grass Nursery

Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Akebono' - Rounded orange to red-orange multitudes of florets densely set in rounded domes about the size of ping pong balls set at the ends of naked warm brown architectonic stems occur late winter to early spring. Striking in appearance I remember seeing this (though it may have been a different Edgeworthia species and cultivar entirely) in Tony Avent's garden in North Carolina in February. From the distance and also in that I was completely unfamiliar with this genus at that time I though I was looking at a dwarf selection of Asian persimmon! (I don't want to mislead you: after all these many years I'm still an idiot.) Was I in denial about needing eye glasses at that point in my life? Probably. Glasses or not: the beautiful, hot color - fireballs from afar frozen in midair is indelibly imprinted in my memory! Edgeworthia is a curious Dapne relative, both of which are under the umbrella of Thymelaeadeae... yes, this family includes Thyme. The Red Dragon Oriental Paperbush should be planted in part shade to full sun in average to sandy draining soil. Established pot grown starter shrub from cutting.
