Hydrangea anomola subsp. petiolaris 'Sutter's Mill'

Climbing Hydrangea

Plant Type:

VINES

Hydrangea anomola ssp. petiolaris 'Sutter's Mill' - Soft, mellow yellow leaves are this selection's distinguishing feature of this unusual form of Climbing Hydrangea. 'Sutter's Mill' would be just beautiful climbing a brick wall or set upon a beach-blue home or one with silvery gray shingles. Oh, heck - what about splaying along the side of a dark red barn or spilling across a granite wall? Typical, large and showy white flowers occur late spring to early summer just skirting atop the leaves. The woody skeletons of the flowers hold through the winter among sinuous, branching dark brown exfoliating wood that displays a putty interior. All in all, Hydrangea anomola ssp. petiolaris 'Sutter's Mill' is a very worthy deciduous four-season vine. Site in morning sun and afternoon open to dappled shade planted in fertile, moisture-retentive but draining soils. Layered and pot-grown.
