Pachysandra procumbens 'Spring Gold' - 'Spring Gold' is a sport of 'Forest Green' with a soft golden spring foliage color which gradually becomes greener as the season progresses. Early spring bottle brush sweetly fragrant flowers are light pink and age white. Richard Lighty graciously shared with us a delightful bit of history regarding 'Spring Gold' and I quote directly: "When the Magnolia Society met in the Wilmington/Philadelphia area a few years back (maybe more than a few! Time changes as you age!), they visited Sally's and My Garden 'Springwood' in Kennett Square, PA. As everyone was boarding the bus, one of the nurserymen members asked me if he could have a piece of a yellow sport he had seen in a planting of Pachysandra procumbens 'Forest Green' in my little "nursery". I said, Oh That, I had seen it and dismissed it as having been the result of my careless with Roundup. He said "I don't think so! So we went back and quickly dug a piece. I continued to watch it and became convinced that it was a true mutation." The genetic variant is a stable one. Site in part to dappled shade in planted in fertile soil, evenly moist to dryish. Established pot grown plant from division.

Genus Overview: Pachysandra procumbens

Common Name: Allegheny Spurge

Pachysandra procumbens. So many Asian woodlanders are, frankly, more beautiful than our North American counterparts (yes, aesthetics are subjective and I'm wrong ALL the TIME!) but Allegheny Spurge bucks this trend. We think this easy going woodland candidate which actually tolerates a surprising degree of sunlight is exceptionally beautiful, more so than the overused Pacysandra terminalis. P. procumbens originates in West Virginia, west to Louisiana, east and south to Florida but is bone-hardy for most of us in New England, into USDA Zone 4b (-15F). Pacysandra procumbens will make an exceptional ground cover albeit slowly in fertile, evenly moist soil but is tolerant of dryer soils. We thank Richard Lighty, Jeanne Frett from Mt.
