Barnardia japonica (syn. Scilla scilloides) – Feathery lavender-pink spikes open in late summer above rich green glossy strap-shaped grassy blades. This is an attractive, easy bulb that will stump your gardening friends… I mean how many Scillas bloom in any season other than spring? Site in full blazing sun planted in well-drained soil mixed with gritty scrabble with a handful of lime added to the planting hole where it will gradually clump nicely. It sprouts and flowers in August in northeastern Connecticut. This is a wide-ranging species; ours has been bone-hardy in USDA zone 5b so we suspect this clone is from the genetic provenance of a cooler climate and will likely perform well in zone 4. We do not know if this genotype will be content in southern gardens. Squill is a relatively fast increaser. Grown from bulbils.
