Amelanchier nantucketensis
Nantucket Serviceberry
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSAmelanchier nantucketensis – Nantucket Shadblow is an endangered endemic. Though smaller and bushier than A. stolonifera it is otherwise very similar in form and stature; after all, they very close cousins. Lovely fleecy white spring flowers are followed by richly colored violet-pink-purple edible berries which mature to dark purple. The birds are likely to find them before you have the opportunity to sample them! Orbicular leaves may pick up decent orange, gold and reddish tones in autumn before dropping. A. nantucketensis is worthy of consideration at the edge of a wild garden or as with A. stolonifera planted in a heath garden. Heaths will thrive under the light shade provided by the overstory. Site in part to full sun planted in fertile, draining and acid soil. Though it hasn't occurred here this shrub is said to grow as tall as 6 feet. The Nantucket Serviceberry has not been easy from cuttings so we may only have a handful available in any given season. Ours will be offered if not by cutting then stoloniferous division; either way established in a pot.
