Hydrangea paniculata ‘Nana’ (ex: Nickou’) – We love this dwarf Panicle Hydrangea. Panicles are pure white, puffy domes on a shrub that can grow 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, up to 6 feet in an especially conducive year. Panicles are normal-sized which makes them appear extra-large on a smaller shrub. Flowers age rose pink and finally in autumn dry to warm brown where they adorn the ends of stems all through the winter. More so than many selections the profuse dried flower heads are persistent until the following spring for us. It's not to the taste and aesthetic of everyone but we love the persistence of the panicles; when traced with new snow they are a knockout. Some folks cut the panicles in late summer, hang them to dry in a cool, airy place and use them indoors in dried autumn arrangements. As this shrub blooms on new wood it can be cut back to lower leaf buds in late winter. Site Hydrangea paniculata ‘Nana’ in full to part sun planted in fertile draining soil. Panicle Hydrangea demonstrates some drought tolerance once established. Established potted shrub, cutting grown.
